To Live is to Learn and to Give

I was reading up some SAMBA graduates’ experience today, and they made me pause. 

They brought back sweet memories of my high school years at UWC Atlantic College, where two hundred of us in their late teens were instilled with the possibilities of the sky and empowered to learn (like a sponge, soaking up all kinds of knowledge and experience available), do good work to benefit the community, support a myriad of charitable and political causes, and be the best of oneself. I don’t know how many educational institutions would call for the importance of such noble ideals in their curriculum, what I do know is that these ideals are very powerful and can induce the tears, laughters and feelings of joy, gratitude and fearlessness as they have from these SAMBA graduates.

Though armed with an eduation that focused on “calling”, I can’t say I’ve fulfilled even 50% of my calling yet. But until today, I’ve never stopped asking myself what my life goals are, plotting them out on a “roadmap” and taking baby steps one day at a time. I also take inventory of what and how I’ve achieved some of the goals and what I’d need to do tomorrow to achieve more. And in the process of doing so, I’d never forget to ask myself what I’m doing to give back—to others as well as the community and organizations I belong and am so blessed with.

Social media is no longer an option

In the security firm Aladdin’s Annual Threat Report of 2008, they predicted that identity theft would go social, “the sheer amount of public data on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Bebo and even MySpace make it easier to impersonate, damage or misrepresent a personal or business identity on the Web. We predict that we will see an increase in the amount of Web identity hijacking, and in response, a serious change in the requirements for validating our identities on the Web.”

Social identity thieves have popped up on all the social networking giants- Twitter, Myspace and Facebook. While celebrities and brands are certainly more at risk than the everyday person, it’s possible that social identity theft could negatively impact your next job search. It’s common practice for recruiters and employers to “Google” potential employers. They “get to know” you before even making a phone call. Beware of the “Facebook ghosts,” fake Facebook profiles that want to be your “friend” in order to get personal information from your page. A popular ghost: a sexy blonde with an alluring smile…after all, you want to be her friend and check out her pictures, dont you?

While I’m a fan of the idea of building a personal brand, after all your image is everything, it’s important to at least protect your identity through social networking accounts. Sign up for Facebook and LinkedIn- to portray a professional image enter your employment information and highlight your skills and specialties. Consider registering a domain or your name, available at for $19.99 and for another $9.99 build your own site. Consolidating your resume, social media accounts and more all on one page is a great idea for job seekers. Although 60% of all “tweeters” quit after a month, if you keep at it you can quickly develop a network of people who share your interests much faster than more traditional methods like actual networking events. Sharing your industry expertise adds to your credibility as well. Same goes for blogging–if you know it, share it. You’d be surprised how many people will benefit from what you have to say.

Create a name for yourself before someone else does.

Recruiters: Think like Marketers

My co-Tweeter brought my attention to this great blog on Cheezehead. Social media and online apps have transformed the way we think about business, marketing, and even recruiting. I wonder if there’s any official survey of the utilization of social media tools by recruiters. But as far as I now, many recruiters have already got swirled into the lightspeed race of finding the best candidates online. LinkedIn, Twitter and SimplyHired are just a few to name. Cheezehead’s Recruiting Starfish says it all (though the resolution of the diagram could be improved); it’s time to re-examine our job boards vs. socnet tools mix in our recruiting practice, and not any less, our strategic mix of website vs. socnet tools use in our marketing practice.

Marketers, check out the way Sodexho is doing it. I think they’re doing something right by being ahead of the socnet game and establishing thought leadership in their own marketplace. Is your audience looped into your latest & greatest socnet activities, or are you operating in an isolated bag of tricks?

Loose lips can keep you afloat!

*Dun dun dun* In these economic times, *dun dun dun* who’s not stressed about job security? And if we’re being honest with each other, who’s not stressed about life in general? As a fairly recent college grad maybe I’m just having a hard time adjusting to life’s growing list of responsibilities (ahem, obstacles), but I have quickly realized I need to prioritize de-stressing if I want to keep my sanity before I hit retirement…or have a work-related breakdown, and I’m way too young for that.

Take these ten tips from Men’s Health (I am an avid reader, and no I’m not a man) to help boost your productivity and keep yourself sane. And while you’re at it, chat up your boss and he’ll be less likely to give you the boot!  

Do we see a trend here? People who are friendly at work are better communicators, and people other people want to be around. So at some point today, while I’m ALL about social networking online, step (or more than that, since exercise is a great stress reducer) back from your desk and physically network!
